This humane education program encourages campers to consider the many different ways we share the world with other living things, with the goal of inspiring respect and appreciation for all life, and encouraging conscientious decision making. Maui Humane Society’s Animal Camp is an educational camp where every day is filled with fun games, crafts, activities, guest speakers and time with the animals! Campers practice positive reinforcement training, socialization, and grooming of shelter pets and explore all aspects of the human-animal bond-  cultivating compassion and encouraging campers to grow into responsible pet owners and advocates for the animals they love!

When do you offer Animal Camp?
Animal Camp is held during Hawai’i Department of Education breaks in the Summer, Fall, and Spring. Our 2017 Summer Animal Camp sessions are scheduled as follows:

  • June 5-9: "All Things Animal" (ages 7-11) - SOLD OUT - recommended for first time Animal Campers (though they can apply to any session) - a comprehensive overview of what MHS does to help animals and how they can help, too.
  • June 19-23: "Weird World of Animals (ages 7-11) - SOLD OUT - Animal Campers celebrate the many ways that animals are unique and different by learning about the world's strangest animals and putting on a Weird Animal Fashion Show!
  • June 26-30: "Wild and Tame" (ages 7-11) - SOLD OUT - Animal Campers learn about the history of animal domestication, how it affects their behavior and relationship with humans and why it is the reason that companion animals rely on us to survive.
  • July 24-28: "Animal Guardians" (ages 10-14) SOLD OUT - This intermediate level Animal Camp is all about youth empowerment! This session tackles more complicated humane education themes like breed discrimination, exotic pets, cultural attitudes toward animals, and empowers them with the tools and skills necessary to advocate for the animals they love. Campers will create advocacy plans to support the issues they personally care about and are encouraged to implement their plans to help make Maui a better place for animals.

Who can attend Animal Camp?
The first three sessions of Summer Animal Camp are open to ages 7 to 11. Our July session will be open to ages 10-14.

How much does it cost to attend Animal Camp?
The registration fee for Animal Camp will be $195 per 5-day session.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations must be made at least two weeks prior to the start of that camp session in order to receive a full refund. Cancellations made in the two weeks before camp are non-refundable.

How many campers are there per session?
We accept 15 students per session so that each camper is appropriately supervised. Register as soon as possible to ensure your child’s spot!

What is a typical day at Animal Camp like?
Every day our students learn lessons in the classroom, spend time outside playing games and in the shelter socializing with the animals. Animal Camp activities promote creativity, critical-thinking and animal advocacy. Our aim is to provide a well-rounded environment for our students that allows them to forge new friendships and creatively cultivate a strong sense of compassion and responsibility for all living things.

Do you provide lunch?
We ask that our campers bring a sack lunch. We provide mid-day snacks. Bring a water bottle- we have a water cooler available on site.

How much time should I expect my child to spend with the animals at the shelter?
Our campers should expect to spend approximately 1-2 hours per day with our shelter animals. We have found this to be ideal for the well-being of our shelter pets.
