Beach Buddies Visitor Program
The Maui Humane Society Beach Buddies program allows visitors and Maui residents to take a dog for a day of fun every Wednesday and Friday from 11-4pm. Although it is called Beach Buddies, you can take your pal hiking, to a dog-friendly restaurant or just hang out on the beach for a little fun in the sun!
HOW DOES BEACH BUDDIES WORK?
Sign up using the link below to guarantee your spot on your preferred day. Note that this program fills up 2-3 months in advance so sign up as soon as you know your available date(s). You will then receive an email on the night before your outing that will include the dogs that have been chosen for the day. Respond to that email with your top three choices, or let us know if you have no preference and we will select for you. Please note that we MUST hear back from you no later than 9am on the day of your outing otherwise we will assume you will not be joining us and will start calling those on the wait list. We want to make sure that every dog has the chance to go out so it is very important that you confirm. This is a very popular program and we generally have several names on the back up list each day. If your date is not available, let us know if you would like to be placed on the standby list and we will call you if we have any availability.
THE DAY OF YOUR OUTING
Please plan to arrive at the shelter by 11am where you will be greeted by our Beach Buddies volunteers. You will do some paperwork, get a quick safety briefing and ask any questions that you may have. We will have your Beach Buddies backpack ready and your dog will be bathed and ready to go! Remember to have fun, take pictures (we love seeing happy pups) and let everyone know that your Beach Buddy is available for adoption! When your day is done, we ask that you return to the shelter no later than 4pm. Come back into the front office where our staff will take your tired pup back to the kennel. We will ask you to complete some information about your day and all of this information will be entered into their file to help them to get adopted and/or possibly even transferred to our of our partners on the mainland through the Wings of Aloha transfer program!
*Note: A suggested minimum donation of $20 is greatly appreciated and helps to offset the costs associated with operating this program. You can support beach Buddies by using the PayPal link below or you can donate in person at the time of your excursion. You can also donate the most commonly used Beach Buddies items such as dog treats and treat bags, "Adopt Me" collars and leashes, towels and poop bags. Many of these items can be found on our Amazon Wish List.
Can I bring my own dog on Beach Buddies? Although our Beach Buddies are generally dog-friendly, we ask that your Beach Buddies dog be the only dog on your excursion. Our shelter dogs often share kennels so they benefit greatly from the one-on-one attention that Beach Buddies provides. Plus, being the only dog gives your Beach Buddy a chance to shine to potential adopters!
Is this program just for visitors? All are welcome to participate in Beach Buddies, both visitors and locals. Also, current MHS volunteers may also participate in Beach Buddies. If you are local, please consider signing up as a back-up as we often have visitors that cancel at the last minute
Where can we go with our dog? We will give you a general idea of where you can take your dog including beaches and some other local areas. We strongly suggest staying local though and we discourage trips to the west side (Lahaina) and the east side (Hana). There is more than enough to keep you busy in Central and Southern Maui!
Who do I call if I have any questions when I am out with my dog? For non-emergencies (you are running late to return your dog, etc.), please call (808) 877-3680 ext. 3. For any emergencies, please call (808) 877-3680 ext. 211 which is our Humane Enforcement dispatch and they will help you.
