Surrendering Your Pet
All stray and owner-surrendered animals must be brought into the shelter during normal business hours, 7 days a week, 11am-6pm. In the case of an emergency, MHS Humane Enforcement can be called at (808) 877-3680 ext.211 for a pick up of a stray animal.
Why did MHS close the overnight receiving kennels?
In keeping with our mission, the decision to close our overnight kennels was made in the best interest of the animals in our care. Requiring that people turning in animals come into the shelter to do so gives us the opportunity to gather valuable health and behavioral information - a practice which will enable us to better care for our shelter animals and understand their needs. Closing the overnight kennels also ensures that animals who arrive in our care sick or injured are able to receive immediate medical attention.
In the year preceding the closure 1,062 animals were dropped off to the Maui Humane Society after hours. 676 animals (63%) did not have any information about the animal. Any and all information (such as where the animal was found) could be useful in helping to get an animal back to their home. In the case of owner-surrenders, having medical records, behavior and personality details can help move animals through the admissions process more efficiently and help get them into a new adoptive home faster.
What does MHS need from an owner in order to surrender an animal?
Maui Humane Society has an open admission policy, which means we accept any owner-surrendered animal. Our goal is to find a happy home for every healthy and treatable animal and to move animals quickly through our facility and into new homes. The more we know about your pet, the better decisions we can make about their care and future. Please bring whatever written information you have about your pet including vaccination and medical records, previous adoption paperwork, etc. Other helpful information may include a brief biography including details about their personality, habits and demeanor. Please make sure that animal is on a leash or in a carrier.
I don’t really want to give up my pet. Is there anything MHS can do to help?
Please check out the Maui Humane Society website resource section for information about pet ownership including finding “pet-friendly” housing which can be challenging on Maui. We can also help with tips on pet behavior such as chewing, litter box issues and more, including finding low cost vet care and options for free/low cost food for your pet.
Is there a fee to surrender my pet?
There is no fee to surrender an animal however donations are accepted. Please note that on average, it costs an animal shelter $858 to care for one animal until he/she finds a forever home.
