Changes due to COVID-19

Maui Humane Society is committed to protecting the health and well-being of the animals in our care, our staff and the community we serve by following guidelines provided by the National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) regarding Animal Control and Sheltering Services during the COVID-19 crisis.

Maui Humane Society is closed to the public until further notice. Limited services are offered BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Call (808) 877-3680  ext. 3 from 9am to 3pm to schedule.

For the safety of our staff and community, please
DO NOT COME TO THE SHELTER WITHOUT AN APPOINTMENT.

24/7 ANIMAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE

24/7 Animal Emergency Response continues to be provided at (808) 877-3680 ext. 221 for emergency calls only. We ask that the public suspend calling to report low priority,  non-emergency activity at this time.

High Priority (Emergency)

  • injured/ sick stray animals
  • cruelty/neglect complaints
  • bite complaints
  • dangerous/aggressive dog complaints

Low Priority (Non-Emergency)

  • non-aggressive stray pick-up
  • leash law and licensing complaints
  • barking/nuisance complaints
  • trapping and transport of community cats
  • found litters of kittens

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADOPT

View all available animals on our website, and call (808) 877-3680 ext. 3 to SCHEDULE an appointment to adopt.

  • All adult cat adoptions are sponsored
  • All adult dogs are $20 to adopt through the end of May.

Is it safe to adopt right now?

We've taken serious steps to ensure that we are able to protect our community while continuing to place shelter animals into loving homes. Adoptions are processed by individual appointment to eliminate crowding, and while there is no evidence that pets can spread COVID-19 (Source: AVMA) every animal who enters or exits our shelter is bathed and wiped down as an added precaution. To find out more about our adoption process during this time, call (808) 877-3680 ext. 3.

IF YOU FIND A STRAY

If you find healthy stray animals during this time, please consider holding onto them or leaving them where they are (“shelter-in-place”) until the shelter can resume normal operations. Stray finders are advised to make an appointment with a vet clinic or MHS to check for a microchip, FILE A FOUND REPORT, and hold the animal to give the owner time to locate them. We encourage you to use social media such as the Facebook page “Lost Pets Maui” and Nextdoor.com to post photos of found animals.

Leave those (healthy) cats where they’re at!

Please reduce risk to our staff and community by LEAVING ALL HEALTHY, STRAY CATS & KITTENS WHERE THEY ARE instead of bringing them to the shelter at this time. This also applies to healthy feral/community cats.

For sick or injured stray animals, please call in advance to schedule an appointment.

IF YOU MUST SURRENDER AN ANIMAL

If you must surrender an animal, we are asking owners who are not facing an immediate crisis to hold their pets for up to four weeks or more, and to surrender at a later date. If you are unable to hold onto your animal, you must call in advance to schedule an appointment.  We are not accepting surrenders of healthy cats or kittens at this time, domesticated or feral.

To make an appointment call (808) 877-3680 ext. 3 from 9am to 3pm. For more information regarding MHS and the COVID-19 crisis, visit mauihumanesociety.org.
