Cartoonist Brian Basset will be on Maui this week to sell artwork that will raise funds for the Maui Humane Society, The Boo Boo Zoo and the Hawaii Animal Rescue Foundation in the wake of the recent fires.

Basset will be at the South Maui Gardens in Kihei from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nalu’s South Shore Grill in Kihei from 7 to 9 p.m., Coffee Attic in Wailuku from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and Maui Humane Society in Puunene from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 29.

The first 250 prints of Basset’s artwork, which includes animals in a shaka sign, were contributed by the syndicate that Basset is a member of. After his visit, Basset will make the artwork available to the three organizations, which can use the seed money from the sale of the prints and T-shirts to continue to fundraise. The first 48 shirts and the profits made off of them, along with the prints, will be divided three ways.

Basset creates the nationally syndicated comic strip “Red and Rover,” which currently runs in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. The son of a cartoonist, Basset called Hawaii home in 1962 when his father drew political cartoons for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. He currently draws from his home-based studio in Edmonds, Wash., and has lent his skills to animal causes and fundraisers around the U.S.
