(Honolulu Star Advertiser): The Maui Humane Society today issued a plea for help due to extreme overcrowding at its shelter, saying that it has had to consider euthanasia for the first time in years.

Maui Humane Society is participating in the nationwide “Empty the Shelters” adoption event from May 1-15. Maui Humane Society is offering $0 adoption fees for dogs over 6 months, cats, all small animals, and a reduced adoption fee of $25 for all kittens. Help is desperately needed at Maui’s only animal shelter. Officials at the Maui Humane Society say it is overcapacity — more than ever before. They even have signs up at the entrance saying, “WE ARE FULL.” “We are asking the community to come and foster animals as soon as they can. What we need is animals to get out of the kennels. We don’t have any open kennels right now, which means any animal coming in, we don’t have space for,” said Katie Shannon, Maui Humane Society director of marketing.

Hawaii Public Radio: Maui Humane Society distributes QR code tags to help relocate pets
Maui Humane Society reportedly receives about five lost pet claims every day. That’s upwards of 1,800 lost dogs at Maui’s shelter a year. To curb those numbers, the nonprofit has partnered with PetHub, a modern pet identification system out of Washington state, to distribute specialized pet tags that owners can add to their animal’s collar.
