2025 Animal Exploration Summer Camp

Calling all young animal lovers! Maui Humane Society is excited to introduce its 2025 Animal Exploration Summer Camp! Animal lovers entering 3rd grade through 8th grade have the opportunity to explore careers in animal welfare, connect with animals, learn about humane care, and more — all while making new friends! Through hands-on activities, games, and guest speakers, campers will gain a deeper understanding of veterinary science, animal care and enrichment, animal advocacy, and responsibility toward our furry friends.

Summer Camp curriculum will align with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education principles. Spots are limited at 15 campers per session, so sign up today for a summer of paws-itively unforgettable experiences!

Camp Sessions

Camp sessions are held Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Camp content and curriculum will be repeated each week for both grade levels.

Participants must bring a water bottle and packed lunch. Snacks and water will be provided. Campers must wear their issued t-shirt (included with camp registration) and close-toed shoes during all camp programming.

Internship Program: Summer Camp Lead

Maui Humane Society is hiring two dedicated paid interns to help lead its Summer Camp program from June 9 through July 18. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with youth, develop leadership skills, and learn about careers in animal welfare. Interns can expect to:

  • Assist with engaging lessons and activities for campers
  • Ensure the safety of campers
  • Help prepare materials and set up for daily camp activities
  • Complete animal handling and education training before camp begins
  • Gain insight into STEAM careers in animal welfare through job shadowing
  • Contribute to bettering the lives of Maui’s animals

What age group is this camp for?
Our camp is designed for elementary children entering grades 3 to 5, or middle school grades 6 to 8. Camp content will be tailored to each age group and will explore careers in animal welfare, humane care, veterinary best practices, and more!

How do I register my camper?

You will receive an email confirmation with next steps, including payment, after filling out the registration form. Please note that registration is not confirmed until payment has been processed and participation confirmed by our team.

Where is the camp located?
Camp will be held at Maui Humane Society, located at Mehameha Loop, Puunene, HI 96784. Specific drop-off and pick-up locations will be shared before camp starts.
What does a typical day at camp look like?
Campers will engage in STEAM-based curriculum and hands-on activities to teach basic animal care, welfare, nutrition, and veterinarian care. Highlighting career pathways that work for the care and safety of animals.
What are the camp hours?
Camp runs from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Thursday.

  • Drop-off begins at 8:30 AM
  • Pick-up is from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM.

Extended care may be available for an additional fee.

What to bring to camp each day?
Campers will need to bring:

  • A refillable water bottle.
  • A packed lunch (nut-free if required).
  • Sunscreen/hat as we will be outdoors.
What is the required attire for camp?
During camp sessions, campers are required to wear:

  • The provided camp shirt. Campers will receive a MHS camp shirt on the first day of camp which they will be required to wear during camp sessions! You will provide the size shirt your camper(s) need in the online registration form.
  • Comfortable shorts or pants that can get messy.
  • Closed-toe shoes for safety.
Will campers have direct contact with animals?
Yes, campers will have supervised, hands-on interactions with shelter animals that are safe and comfortable with children. Safety is our top priority, and all interactions will be closely monitored by staff.
Are there any health or vaccination requirements?
All campers must submit with a registration application a completed health form, including emergency contacts, allergies, and medical conditions. 
What safety measures are in place?
Our camp follows all safety protocols, including:

  • Staff trained in first aid and CPR
  • Safe animal handling procedures
  • Sanitation between activities
  • Emergency response plans
My camper has allergies (pets, food, environmental)—can they still attend?
We aim to accommodate all campers as best as possible. Please indicate any allergies on the health form so we can work together on a plan to keep your child safe.
What is your cancellation and refund policy?

Who are the camp staff?
Our camp team includes experienced educators, animal care specialists, volunteers and interns registered through MEDB, Maui Economic Development Board. All staff and volunteers over 18 years old undergo background checks and training.
Can parents visit or volunteer during camp?
For safety and space reasons, camp is a camper-only experience during program hours.
Will photos be taken during camp?
Yes, we may take photos to share with families and for promotional use. A photo release form will be included in your registration application.
Can I register my child up for more than one session?
Due to the limited number of registrations each participant can only attend one session for their age group. Every session will be covering the same lessons and activities.
