How do I know if I'm ready to adopt?

Choosing to adopt a pet is a big decision, and coming to that decision is different for everyone. Answering these questions is a great starting point!

Can I adopt a pet if I don't live on Maui?

Yes, but some requirements have to be met in order to do so, many of which are listed here. We can help! Give us a call at (808) 877-3680.

Health Certificate
If you are flying your adopted pet out of the State of Hawaii a Health Certificate provided by a licensed veterinarian is required within 10 days of the flight. This document certifies that your animal is healthy and safe to fly. The cost for a Health Certificate is $40.

Rabies Vaccination
If you are flying your adopted pet out of the State of Hawaii, a Rabies Vaccination is required for pets of appropriate age. The fee for the vaccination is $20.

Air Kennel for Transport
Cost can range from $30-$250 for an air kennel depending on the size of the animal you are shipping. The animal must have enough space to stand up and turn around comfortably in the air kennel and have metal hardware that is secure for shipping.

Flight Options
Each airline has specific restrictions and availability. Shipping methods often depend on the airline you have selected for transport. In some cases animals can be in the cabin with you, shipped as baggage or flown as cargo. How can I be sure the pet I am interested in is the right fit for my home?

As much as we take the time to learn about each pet in our care, we don’t always have their history to show what they are like in a home environment. If you want to make sure the pet you are interested in is a good fit for your home and your other pets, our Paws to Adopt program is a great solution. Paws to Adopt is a 10-day adoption trial program for prospective animal parents that allows you to bring your new friend home before committing to adoption. The program is applicable for all animals 6 months of age and older.

I can't adopt right now but I want to help Maui's pets. What can I do?

If you are not in a position to adopt, but can have a pet in your home temporarily, fostering is a great option for you! Not only does fostering relieve shelter capacity for Maui Humane Society, which allows us to give critical care to other pets in need, but it’s also a wonderful way to help us learn more about an animal in a home environment. That way, when it is time for the pet to find a family of their own, we know more about their needs to matchmake and find the perfect fit. Those who love animals, enjoy the freedom of traveling, or aren’t ready for the full commitment of being a pet owner would all make excellent MHS foster parents.

Best of all, fostering is free! MHS provides all food, supplies, veterinary care, training and support. All you need to provide is a safe home and lots of love for your foster pet! Learn more.
