We realize surrendering your pet is a very difficult decision and we understand that there are times when keeping a pet is just not possible. Resources are available to you, and Maui Humane Society is here to help.
Before surrendering to the shelter, have you tried rehoming your pet? Try the free website, Rehome (cats and dogs only). It’s the best option for both you and the pet.
Surrender appointments are currently scheduled out 2 weeks. Urgent cases are prioritized. Please submit a Surrender Inquiry Form as soon as you are able so that our team can offer assistance to you and your pet as soon as possible.

I don’t really want to give up my pet. Is there anything MHS can do to help?
Animal surrenders are by appointment only and are currently scheduled out 2 weeks. Please fill out the Pet Surrender Inquiry Form and our Pet Retention Specialist will reach out to you as soon as possible.
We can help with tips on pet behavior such as chewing, litter box issues and more, including finding low cost vet care and options for free/low cost food for your pet.
Rehoming your pet is the best option for both you and your pet if keeping it isn’t feasible after speaking with our team.
What does MHS need from an owner in order to surrender an animal?
Maui Humane Society has an open admission policy, which means we accept any owner-surrendered animal. Our goal is to find a happy home for every healthy and treatable animal and to move animals quickly through our facility and into new homes. The more we know about your pet, the better decisions we can make about their care and future. In order to schedule a surrender appointment, a background form is required. This form will be provided to those in need of surrender once our team has received a Surrender Inquiry Form. Please bring whatever written information you have about your pet including vaccination and medical records, previous adoption paperwork, etc. Please make sure that animal is on a leash or in a carrier.
Is there a fee to surrender my pet?
There is a $100 fee to surrender an animal with an appointment. Please note that on average, it costs an animal shelter $858 to care for one animal until he/she finds a forever home.
For animal emergencies, please reach MHS’ Humane Enforcement Department.
Have you considered rehoming your pet?
Rehoming your pet is the best option for both YOU and the PET. You will have the ability to decide what home the pet goes to and communicate with the new owner.
Before surrendering, try using the free rehoming pet listing service on our rehome page to the community of Maui who are seeking new homes for their dogs or cats in order to avoid surrendering their pets to our shelter. To add your pet to the rehoming service, please first create an account here. We also recommend posting throughout social media groups and talking with neighbors and friends.
