The esteemed and talented Dr. Miyo Kim is retiring after 25 years at Maui Humane Society, and over 40 years of service in the animal medicine field! She will be greatly missed, but we are happy for her as she enters this next exciting chapter of her life.

A few words on a webpage can hardly capture the immense gratitude and aloha we have for Dr. Kim. Her dedication, hard work, and can-do attitude have made our Vet Staff team what it is today. Along with a handful of other Maui Humane Society employees, Dr. Kim has not only seen the transformation that our shelter has gone through over the years, she has had an integral and influential role in shaping it into the loving, caring place it has become.

Dr. Kim has touched the lives of so many humans and saved the lives of thousands of animals. We are so proud of her and her legacy and honored that she chose us as her ‘ohana away from home. Our Vet Staff team will continue to follow in her footsteps and practice diligence, compassion, and understanding, just as she always did.

If Dr. Kim has helped you in some way or if you are simply inspired by her work, please help us keep her legacy alive by making a donation in her honor. You can write a personalized message that will be delivered to her and help make her well-deserved retirement even sweeter.

Mahalo nui loa,
Maui Humane Society

In honor of Dr. Kim, we will also be having an Adoption Day promotion on Saturday, August 14. On that day, we are waiving adoption fees for all animals (except kokua animals and puppies), excluding the County of Maui licensing fee. If you choose to donate, all adoption donations will go towards the 2021 Charity Walk. Mahalo for your support!

“It’s difficult to explain how valuable Dr. Kim has been to MHS over the years. She has been directly involved in increasing MHS lifesaving efforts over 25 years and has brought MHS to where it stands today. Her love of animals and her contributions to the community are immeasurable.”

Longtime vet retiring after 25 years of service

THE MAUI NEWS – Dr. Miyo Kim’s home is often filled with a few foster pets — this is the “hazards of the job” for someone who has spent many hours for the past 25 years caring for and providing medical attention to animals at the Maui Humane Society.

“I’ve tried to really watch and control myself so to speak, but all the animals that I’ve gotten have been rescues,” Kim said with a laugh on Thursday. “I just adopted two of my foster kittens about three years ago and I just adopted a little dog two years ago.”

And after about 42 years total in the veterinary medicine field and thousands of surgeries later, Kim will be retiring from the shelter as the Maui Humane Society Director of Veterinary Services.

However, she won’t be stepping away entirely as she plans to continue helping with the occasional surgery as needed.
