Maui Humane Society awarded Community-Focused Programs Grant from the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation
Maui Humane Society has been awarded new funding to implement community-focused programs and services made possible by the generosity of the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation, a private charitable foundation based in Incline Village, Nevada. The grant will be distributed over a three year term with the intent to increase life saving efforts and expand resources beyond the shelter to reach at-risk pets throughout the island. Funding highlights include the purchase of a specialized truck and trailer to provide veterinary community outreach, hiring an additional veterinarian and support team, an expanded Foster department, an educational Humane Enforcement Resource Officer, expanded Wings of Aloha program to support inter-island transfers and further development of pet owner resources to help keep animals in their homes.
Maui News: Maui Humane Society holding open houses about fostering dogs, cats and critters
Maui Humane Society is teaming up with national nonprofit Petco Love and Skechers to focus on the fun in fostering pets, which is lifesaving and especially critical during the busy summer months. Fostering is free, and it can begin on the same day. Maui Humane Society is participating in the nationwide Foster Open House:
June 25, 11:30 a.m.: For those interested in fostering dogs, puppies or Wings of Aloha fosters. Wings of Aloha is a donation-funded program that takes shelter animals and flies them to the mainland United States for adoption.
June 26, 11:30 a.m.: For those interested in fostering cats, kittens or critters (bunnies and guinea pigs)
KHON2: Maui Humane Society hosting foster open house
Maui Humane Society will also join shelters nationwide for the National Foster Pet Open House event by inviting the public to visit the shelter on Saturday, June 25 and 26 at 11:30 a.m. for an interactive foster meet-and-greet party for two-and four-legged friends. Those who attend will learn about the types of fostering available (long term, short term, emergency), meet available foster dogs, cats, kittens and critters, and can leave with a foster animal that day.
KHON2: Free spay, neuter clinics on Maui
In efforts to humanely control the growing pet population on Maui, there will be a program to provide free spay and neuter clinics in Hana. Maui Humane Society partnered with Greater Good Charities Good Fix to provide free clinics from June 9 through June 12.
KHON2: Humane societies across the islands need help now
Puppies, kittens, and bunnies are all in need of a good home as humane societies across the island are filling up. Abandonment and surrendering of pets are a big reason why the humane societies are full, and this is due to people downsizing and moving houses. Katie Shannon from the Maui Humane Society said finding animal approved housing is “so so difficult and the housing that is allowed to have an animal at is so expensive that it’s really not obtainable for a large part of the population.”
Maui Now: 500 animals to be spayed or neutered during free clinics in Hāna, June 9-12
Maui Humane Society is partnering with Greater Good Charities’ Good Fix program to provide free spay/neuter clinics in Hāna from June 9 through June 12. This partnership will allow upwards of 500 owned pets (dogs and cats) and free-roaming cats to be spayed or neutered to help effectively and humanely control the pet population over time.
