Visiting & Drop-In Volunteers
Are you visiting Maui and looking to help out? At Maui Humane Society, we have a variety of drop-in volunteer opportunities available that span across all ages! Whether you can stop by for an hour or you plan to visit frequently, our furry friends will always appreciate any help and time you can give!

Who Can Drop-In Volunteer?
Drop-in volunteering is open to all animal lovers ages 16. Keiki (children) ages 5-15 are welcome to participate and must be accompanied by an adult 18 years and older all times while on our campus.
How Do I Participate?
As a drop-in volunteer, you are not required to sign up online prior to your arrival. Drop-in volunteers are welcome to visit our shelter during open hours (Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.), stop by our front office to sign in and grab a name tag, and then search for our Drop-In Volunteer Stations placed around the shelter!
How Can I Help?
Drop-in volunteers can help with a variety of tasks around the shelter. This includes but isn’t limited to: reading to dogs, cleaning cat kennels in the Cat Ohana, coloring for cats, and helping with laundry!
We also offer two fantastic drop-in volunteer opportunities that require signing up in advance:
- Prep Animal Enrichment Items: Help us create enrichment items for our cats, dogs, rabbits, and guinea pigs! Most projects can be taken home to complete and returned the next day, making them perfect for kids and groups. It’s a fun way to get involved and support our animals! Sign up here.
- Looking for a chance to interact with a shelter dog? Check out our Dog on Demand program for a paws-on experience! The focus is to provide outing opportunities for the dogs that need it the most to spend time out of the shelter. This program requires a prior sign-up and fills up fast, so be sure to look into this before you arrive! Sign up here.
FAQs
Can I walk the dogs if I’m only volunteering for the day?
Thank you for your interest in spending time with our dogs! Our dog walkers must complete specific training and is not an option for drop-in volunteers.
However, if you’d like to interact with our dogs, we recommend our Dog on Demand program, where you can take a dog out on a field trip for a few hours. We suggest signing up in advance for the best experience.
Also, as part of our drop-in volunteer activities, you can read to the dogs from outside their kennels, which is a great way to spend time with them!
How many people can come at the same time for drop-in volunteering?
Drop-in volunteering is open to everyone, and there’s no limit to how many people can join at the same time! However, if your group includes more than 10 people, we kindly ask that you reach out to us in advance at [email protected] so we can help accommodate you.
Does dropping in for an hour really make a difference?
Absolutely! Any time spent volunteering at Maui Humane Society makes an incredible difference to the animals we serve.
How Else Can I Help?
Help fly MHS dogs to our transfer partners on the continent via MHS’ Wings of Aloha: Alaska Angels program! Maui Humane Society’s Wings of Aloha: Alaska Angels program matches pets traveling to new homes at our transfer partners on the continent with Alaska Airlines passengers who serve as the chaperones for their journey.
Bring the purrfect companion home with you from Maui! Did you know you can adopt a shelter pet from Maui Humane Society and bring them home with you?! We have a variety of resources and tools available to help. Stop by and chat with our Adoptions Team or email [email protected]. Can’t adopt? Spread the word to friends, family, and people you know who will be traveling to Maui!
Donations, monetary or in-kind, are always appreciated and needed to continue our lifesaving work. Your contribution to Maui Humane Society will help protect and save the lives of the thousands of animals who come through our doors each year in need of compassionate care.
