As a volunteer at MHS you will have the chance to meet other volunteers, MHS staff, like minded people in your community, and countless loving pets looking for their forever homes. Who can be an ongoing volunteer?

Anyone can volunteer! Maui Humane Society welcomes volunteers of all ages to support the homeless pets of Maui.

What can I do as a volunteer?

Volunteers can help with a variety of tasks, such as cat care, dog walking, administrative assistance, veterinary assistance, emergency response, education, outreach events, maintenance and gardening, fundraising and more.

Adult volunteers 18 and older may bring their keiki ages 5-15 to volunteer alongside them. Keiki must have an adult present to volunteer. Keiki and families can help with a variety of tasks, such as cat care and socialization, administrative assistance, education, outreach events, maintenance and gardening, fundraising, and more.

How do I become a volunteer?

Please email our Volunteer Program Manager at volunteer@mauihumanesociety.org with your name, age, phone number, and a brief note about how you’re interested in volunteering. Whether you’re excited about working directly with animals, helping behind the scenes, or supporting our community programs, we’re happy to help you find a great fit.

Due to the high level of interest, please allow 2–3 weeks for a response. We appreciate your patience as we work to connect each volunteer with the right opportunity.

To provide consistent care for the animals, active volunteers are asked to commit to at least 4 hours per month. Please note that volunteers must be at least 16 years old to work in the kennels or participate in dog walking, dog activities, or Kamaʻāina Beach Buddies (KBB).

FAQs

Can I help in the Veterinary department?

Yes! Our amazing veterinary team can always use extra hands in the clinic and for veterinary-related events! Tasks you might help with would be sterilizing medical instruments, stocking hospital rooms where our animals are recovering, monitoring animals in recovery, paperwork input, and more.

Veterinary volunteers must be 18 years and older and we ask for a minimum commitment of 3 months.

How can I walk the dogs?

To walk the dogs, you must be at least 16 years old and have completed our in-person kennel training session. After successfully completing the training, You’ll be all set to start walking the dogs and making a positive impact on their lives!

How can I fulfill community service hours?

Need to complete school, court, or community service hours? Join our ongoing volunteer pack!

Our Drop-in volunteer opportunities are meant for one-time visits and cannot be used to fulfill service hour requirements. To earn verified hours, please follow the steps on this page to sign up to become an Ongoing Volunteer! You’ll go through our training, become part of our regular team, and make a continued impact for Maui’s animals in need.

How Else Can I Help?

Help fly MHS dogs to our transfer partners on the continent via MHS’ Wings of Aloha: Alaska Angels program! The process is simple and free. All you need to do is email [email protected] where you will be prompted to fill out your flight information. Should a scheduled animal transport match your itinerary, we will be in touch! At this time, flights must be with Alaska Airlines only and must be to the West Coast to be eligible.
