Hawaii News Now: Story of hope, for a rescue pup and the family she saved, nets $50k for Maui Humane Society

Rory Stoykoff says his late wife, Zayna, was a beautiful person. Three years ago, the Maui middle school teacher was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“It was triple negative breast cancer. If you have breast cancer, it’s the one you do not want to have,” Stoykoff said.

During her treatment, there was a glimmer of hope when the couple thought she would get better.

“In celebration, she got a dog without telling me,” Stoykoff said.

That dog was a mixed-breed rescue animal from the Maui Humane Society. The Stoykoffs named her Kaia.

The Maui News: Mahi Pono leases land so Maui Humane Society can expand

Mahi Pono has executed a long-term lease agreement with Maui Humane Society for a 3-acre parcel that will allow the nonprofit to expand its facility, the organizations announced Tuesday.

The Mahi Pono-owned parcel is adjacent to the humane society’s Puunene facility and will be leased for $1 a year for 60 years, according to a news release.
