Moving Off-Island With Your Pet

Traveling off the island with your pet is generally more straightforward than bringing them to Hawai‘i, as the state’s quarantine and direct release regulations do not apply when leaving; however, proper planning is essential.

Pre-Flight Planning

When planning your move, you’ll need to consider:

Kennel availability: Air travel kennels may take time to ship to the island.
Flight limitations: Not all flights can accommodate all kennel sizes.
State regulations: Entry requirements for other states vary — vaccinations, health certificates, and documentation may differ.

Tip: Always call your airline in advance to confirm your flight can accommodate your pet’s kennel size and to review pet-specific travel rules.

Health Certificate Process

Health certificate requirements vary by airline and destination. Please make sure you are checking the requirements for both. Most airlines and states require a health certificate issued within 10 days of your departure (including the date of the exam). A health certificate for airline travel with a pet is an official document issued by a licensed veterinarian that confirms your pet is healthy and fit to travel.

We recommend asking your pet’s veterinarian if they offer health certificates. Otherwise, At Home Animal Hospital in Kahului provides this service.

Airlines That Transport Pets

The following airlines currently allow pet transport, in the cabin and/or in the climate-controlled cargo section of the airplane. Each airline has its own set of rules and it is recommended to contact your airline directly for the most accurate information. Please note, service animals may be subject to different regulations.

Pet Carriers & Kennels

Proper kennel sizing is crucial for your pet’s comfort and flight eligibility. Each airline may have different regulations regarding kennel structure, identification, and more.

Measuring your pet for a kennel is one of the most important parts of ensuring a safe and stress-free flight. Airlines have specific size requirements, and the goal is comfort, ventilation, and enough space for natural movement. Weight alone is not an accurate indication of the necessary kennel size for your pet — length, width, and height matter most.
