The eight-year-old poi dog first stepped into the Maui Humane Society on June 11, 2022 after she was left behind in her home when her family moved out. Nala is currently in a foster home. Her foster family said she’s the sweetest senior pup who loves adventures, sunbathing and taking naps.

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A lack of pet-friendly rentals has led to overcrowding at humane societies statewide. “We really kind of hit our boiling point, which was 130 dogs, and we have only 40 kennels,” said Jenny Miller, Maui Humane Society interim CEO.
The Maui Humane Society’s 2024 Pet Calendar Photo Contest is back. Donations from the contest are used to help shelter animals at the Maui Humane Society. This year’s theme is “Aloha Spirit” and pet owners are encouraged to share why “we’re lucky to live in Hawaii.” All entries are required to be submitted horizontally.
HONOLULU (KITV4) — Shelters across the state and the nation are urgently looking for foster homes to help with overcrowding in their facilities. Maui Humane Society says it is also in a similar crisis, with over 130 dogs in care and only 40 kennels. For the first time in years, it too may have to euthanize animals due to extreme overcrowding.
Maui Humane Society is asking anyone with information regarding who shot a puppy in Kula with a pellet gun to report it. Information can be shared directly to the organization or callers can remain anonymous by reaching out to Maui Crime Stoppers.
Maui Humane Society is asking for witnesses to come forward. “There are charges that they could be faced with and have to go to court. They could face jail time and fines for this as well,” said Humane Enforcement Officer Erin Shapiro. “I wouldn’t give up hope. There are still ways that the community could come together and maybe figure out who did it.”
The Maui Police Department is taking the lead in providing services at a growing homeless camp. MPD’s Mobile Medical Educational Unit has been near “cut mountain” in West Maui since January. Maui Humane Society is partnering with Greater Good Charities’ Good Fix program to provide a free, three-day spay and neuter clinic in Hana from Tuesday to Thursday. Hana community members can bring their dogs, cats or any free-roaming cat to Hana High & Elementary School Gymnasium for free same-day surgery.
