HONOLULU (KITV4) — Shelters across the state and the nation are urgently looking for foster homes to help with overcrowding in their facilities. Maui Humane Society says it is also in a similar crisis, with over 130 dogs in care and only 40 kennels. For the first time in years, it too may have to euthanize animals due to extreme overcrowding.

KHON2: Opportunity for free spay, neuter clinic returns to Hana
An opportunity for a free spay or neuter clinic is returning for a couple of days through the Maui Humane Society and its partner Good Fix. Maui Humane Society said they are pushing to effectively and humanely control the pet population over time with spayed or neutered clinics. So Hana community members are invited to bring their dogs, cats or any free-roaming cat to Hana High and Elementary School Gymnasium for free same-day surgery. The clinic will take place between June 6 and June 8.

Overcrowding at Maui Humane Society has staff putting out a desperate plea to the public. KITV4 speaks with Jenny Miller, interim CEO, “This is unprecedented, the increase of intake year over year is crazy, the number of strays coming in is really high, there’s no rhyme or reason with the summer months, and our last option is to reach out to the public with a real plea and ask if anyone can help us.”

Help is desperately needed at Maui’s only animal shelter. Officials at the Maui Humane Society say it is overcapacity — more than ever before. They even have signs up at the entrance saying, “WE ARE FULL.” “We are asking the community to come and foster animals as soon as they can. What we need is animals to get out of the kennels. We don’t have any open kennels right now, which means any animal coming in, we don’t have space for,” said Katie Shannon, Maui Humane Society director of marketing.

Maui Humane Society has put out an urgent request to the public to help find temporary or permanent homes for its dogs as it’s currently over capacity. Officials said 30 “SOS Fosters” are needed immediately to help free up space.
