KITV4 speaks with Jenny Miller, interim CEO, “This is unprecedented, the increase of intake year over year is crazy, the number of strays coming in is really high, there’s no rhyme or reason with the summer months, and our last option is to reach out to the public with a real plea and ask if anyone can help us.”

Brutus is 4 years old, he loves back scratches and toys that are squeaky. But he’s at-risk for being euthanized. “We have never come out to the community before to talk about euthanasia the way that we are now, and what we’re trying to do is increase our transparency to really showcase, we need help,” said Director of Marketing, Katie Shannon.

Maui Humane Society faces euthanasia decisions during overcrowding crisis

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Maui Humane Society is faced with the devastating decision of possibly euthanizing some animals as they deal with extreme overcrowding. According to the Maui Humane Society, they have over 130 dogs in care and only 40 kennels so for the first time in years the shelter is forced to create a list of at-risk animals for euthanasia.

Star Advisor: Hawaii’s humane societies offer reduced adoption fees

The Maui Humane Society  is also holding an “Empty the Shelters” adoption special from today through May 15. Adoptions will be free for dogs over 6 months old, cats, and small animals. Adoption fees for kittens will be reduced to $25. The event comes at a time when many shelter animals are desperately in need of temporary fosters or adoptions, according to MHS spokeswoman Katie Shannon, which recently issued another plea for “SOS fosters” to help take in dogs due to shelter overcapacity.
