khon2 - new years fireworks

MAUI, Hawaii (KHON2) — With New Year’s right around the corner, the Maui Humane Society is reminding pet owners to be cautious because pets tend to get lost during fireworks.

Fireworks are loud and can scare pets, and when they’re scared, they often run away from home. Every year after New Year’s Eve, the shelter sees more lost dogs and cats coming in.

“Our priority is to keep pets where they feel safest, which is at home with the people who love them,” said Jennifer Goguen, MHS’ Director of Pet Resources. “We see how frightened pets become when fireworks send them running, exposing them to traffic and other real dangers and it’s something no family wants to experience.” – Jennifer Goguen, MHS’ Director of Pet Resources

Pet owners are asked to keep their pets inside before fireworks start. The Humane Society recommends providing a quiet, secure space where pets feel safe.

Owners should also ensure their pets wear collars with up-to-date ID tags with the correct contact information.

If a pet goes missing, people can report lost or found pets on the Maui Humane Society website.

Maui Humane Society says that planning can keep pets safe and make New Year’s Eve better for everyone.
