HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Maui Humane Society loaded pallets of dog and cat food, crates, towels, and beds for animals on Thursday.
The essential supplies are headed to areas like Hana, where last week’s storm destroyed the humane society’s kennels.
Some parts of East Maui have been without power for nearly a week, and help for the area has been slowed by debris and downed wires.
Hawaiian Electric said about 220 customers are without power, and it used a helicopter to set a 55-foot pole and deliver digging equipment.
The Hana Highway is only open to emergency vehicles, essential workers, and local traffic.
Sharon Jahns, an East Maui Enforcement Officer with the Maui Humane Society, said she found two dogs that were trying to get back to their home carrying chains.
“They had broken away. They’re scared,” she said.
Jahns said she had her dog in her kennel when the storm broke out.
