Nearly one year after Lahaina wildfires, MHS is in need of the same community response as August 2023

Maui Humane Society (MHS) is pleading for the community’s help in temporarily fostering homeless pets, in an effort to make space for incoming animals. As Maui’s only open-intake shelter, MHS’ doors must remain open for sick, injured, abused, and surrendered animals. There are currently more than 500 animals in MHS’ care, with more than 200 being in foster homes.

In the wake of the Lahaina wildfires of August 2023, families across the island opened their homes to foster pets to allow the shelter to take in those who needed critical care. At the time of the wildfires, 225 animals were placed in foster homes. In the two weeks following the fires, thanks to the incredible support of the community, 500 pets were placed in foster homes.

Today, nearly one year later, MHS is experiencing a similar capacity crisis and lack of kennel space. As fires continue to threaten the island, MHS remains focused on planning for both shelter evacuations and community evacuations in which pets may have nowhere else to go. We are urgently asking our community to offer the same level of support now, during the capacity crisis we are experiencing.

MHS relies on assistance from the community in fostering and adopting dogs, cats, and small animals. Fosters are members of the public who temporarily care for pets at home, so that space is available for animals who need veterinary and behavioral care in the shelter. Fostering is free, as MHS provides all food, supplies, training, and round-the-clock support. Those interested in opening their homes to a pet who needs them are encouraged to visit mauihumanesociety.org/foster or visit MHS during open hours.

In addition, MHS is offering $0 adoption fees for all dogs and cats 6 months and older, as well as small animals. Kittens 6 months and younger have adoption fees of just $50. Adoptable dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, and microchipped. MHS’ shelter is located in Pu’unene at Mehameha Loop and is open for adoptions Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. All adoptable pets are listed on MHS’ website at mauihumanesociety.org/adopt.
