Maui Times: The Maui Humane Society’s kennel capacity for dogs is 40. At present, they have 150 canines in their care.

Per an MHS statement, “In these moments of high population, Maui Humane Society signals ‘SOS Foster’ which asks anyone in the community to foster an animal. Participants do not need previous experience plus they receive the necessary supplies, completely free of charge. There is no pressure to adopt through SOS Foster and the amount of time the animal stays in your home is dependent on their schedule. Additionally, other ways the community can help is through adoption, Paws-to-Adopt (10-day adoption trial), Dog on Demand program and help spreading the word.”

The local housing crisis has strained the Humane Society, as MauiTimes previously reported. People who lose their rentals often can’t find pet-friendly housing and are forced to choose between moving off-island or giving up their animals.

For more information about the SOS Foster program, visit the Humane Society’s website or call (808) 877-3680.
