The Maui Humane Society is reducing adoption fees as it participates in the nationwide “Empty the Shelters” campaign starting today through July 31, the shelter announced.

BISSELL Pet Foundation is teaming up with MetLife Pet Insurance for the national reduced-fee adoption event, which will include more than 335 shelters in 44 states with pets available for adoption for just $50 or less, according to a joint news release from the Maui Humane Society and BISSELL Pet Foundation.

The Maui Humane Society’s reduced adoption rates during the campaign will include $50 for adult dogs and kittens; $25 for small animals, including guinea pigs and rabbits; and $10 for adult cats. Animals available for adoption can be viewed at mauihumanesociety.org. If a blue banner stating “foster home” is reflected on the animal’s picture, an appointment is necessary to visit the animal. To make an appointment, call (808) 877-3680, ext. 3, during the shelter’s new operating days from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

The humane society has put out urgent calls in recent months for adoption or fostering of animals as extreme overcrowding at the shelter put some animals at risk of euthanasia. Every day the shelter receives an average of four to five stray animals, the humane society said in May.

Potential adopting owners are encouraged to do research on the pet they are interested in adopting, as well as adoption requirements.

Since the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters” efforts began in 2016, nearly 158,000 pets at 669 animal welfare organizations in 49 states and Canada have gotten another shot at a home, according to the news release. An average of 1,200 shelter pets are adopted each day during each quarterly national event.

Pet of the Week

Aloha kakou! My name is Kilo and I am this week’s Pet of The Week at Maui Humane Society! Nothing makes my heart sing like a good tennis ball! I can be a little shy meeting new people, but I really enjoy the company of other dogs, and tennis balls! Did I mention how much I love tennis balls?
