Vote for your favorite furry pet-hero pair in the highly awaited Maui Humane Society’s annual calendar contest fundraiser, in partnership with Maui’s firefighters and lifeguards. Supporters and fans of Hawaii’s rescuers and animals-in-need can place their votes here for $1 per vote and the top 12 photos will be featured in the printed calendar.
“The collective rescue efforts of Maui Humane Society’s staff and volunteers, along with the heroic actions of Maui’s firefighters and lifeguards, serves as a tribute to the unbreakable bond between animals and humans,” MHS Director of Development, Kathleen Hogarty, said. “Through this calendar fundraiser, we aim to highlight the bravery and resilience of our island, and showcase the importance of community solidarity during crises.”
Of the furry contenders, there are dogs, cats, one guinea pig and even a silkie chicken. Some of the them have homes, but others are available for adoption, or are in foster homes. The human contestants are either members of the Hawaii Fire Fighters Association or the Hawaii Government Employees Association.
There are quite a few animals who were rescued during the time of the Lahaiana wildfires disaster last August. For example, Baby Stella, a 1-year-old Silkie Chicken, was found roaming in the Lahaina burn zone on August 11, 2023. Baby Stella currently has 385 votes, and is pictured with Lee, a Firefighter II from the Kahului station on Rescue 10.
Maui Humane Society took in more than 880 pets from the Lahaina wildfire burn zone and of those, 220 pets were reunited with their families and 220 were adopted into new ones.
More information on the contest can be found at mauihumanesociety.org/2025calendar. Pet owners may also reserve a day to honor their pet with a photo on the day of their choosing (reservations require a $150 donation with proceeds benefiting MHS).
