Service animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities.
Examples of such work or tasks include guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling a wheelchair, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, reminding a person with mental illness to take prescribed medications, calming a person with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during an anxiety attack, or performing other duties.
Can I bring my service dog into Maui Humane Society’s adoption center? By law, service animals can be restricted from areas where the animals on display are the natural prey or predators of dogs, where the presence of a dog would be disruptive, causing the displayed animals to behave aggressively or become agitated. For this reason, visiting dogs are not allowed in areas occupied by our shelter pets.
