PUUNENE (HawaiiNewsNow) – Maui police are investigating an early morning break-in at the Maui Humane Society.
The alarms went off at the facility in Puunene around 4 a.m. Wednesday.
An alleged thief drove through the shelter’s gates, shattered the doors and windows, and pulled out the wires of the newly-upgraded surveillance system.
The shelter said the thief left with cash from the front office before police arrived.
Fortunately, no animals were hurt.
“The first thing we (did) when we arrived on campus was to make sure that the animals were safe and none of them were touched,” said Kathleen Hogarty, director of development at the Maui Humane Society. “The theft happened in our front office, so the kennels are behind the front office, so they didn’t, or what footage our cameras did capture showed that the perpetrator didn’t go near the kennels.”
There have been no arrests so far.
Despite the damage, the shelter was open for adoptions.
“It’s beyond heartbreaking because the team that I support, they go over and above to serve the cats and the dogs and the animals that have no advocates for them,” said Hogarty. “To know that we were targeted for doing such great work really crushes the soul of all of my colleagues.”
The shelter is now asking the community for help with donations to repair the security cameras.
