PUUNENE (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Maui Humane Society is begging for help: They have more than 600 animals in their shelter and zero space to care for them all.
They are asking community members to open up their homes and their hearts.
“In my experience, this is the worst it’s been,” said Maui Humane Society spokesperson Victoria Ivankic. “Capacity is already a struggle as it is. We only have so many resources. But add in the fact that half of the animals we’re caring for are from the fires, it just adds more stress.”
Ivankic came to Maui in August to help all the animals that survived the fires.
Several months later, she said, her desire to help is stronger than ever.
She said nearly six months after the fires, the Maui Humane Society is still taking in animals from the Lahaina burn zone almost every day.
Like Keebler, who has been at the shelter since August. Staff members helped him through his trauma, fears, and depression, and he is still looking for a forever home.
The humane society is also still caring for nearly 300 cats that survived the fires.
“This is really their only life-saving chance they have,” Ivankic said.
Lorna Griffin has been a volunteer with the Maui Humane Society for nearly three years now.
She participates in the shelter’s “Beach Buddies” program and takes a furry friend out to play every chance she can.
“My heart is just full every time that I go out, and I know that I’m doing so good for the dog, and it’s a give take. I mean, we give each other love. It’s great,” Griffin said.
Griffin promises her fellow community members that it is worth it.
